Starwood Hotel properties
(293 in North America) — including W, Westin and Sheraton and St. Regis hotels — will roll out the red carpet to
welcome dogs.
The hotels will provide special bowls for food and water, plus luxurious designer doggie beds.
At Starwood's Westin and Sheraton hotels, there's no extra charge for canine guests. At the W, when staying
with a pooch expect a $25 tariff because of the royal amenities: designer chew toys, an ID tag and a peanut butter
bedtime treat.
One member of the Westin, the newly renovated four-star Trianon Palace, is really putting on the dog — for dogs, that is!
The Trianon Palace (Versailles,France) now offers a $400-a-night Heavenly Pets package. Custom-made beds covered
in violet fake fur, message therapists, healthy haute cuisine — no necessity has been spared! (No program
for cats, but upon request, the chef will craft a cat happy meal.)

The National
Disaster Search Dog Foundation which trains rescue dogs, is seeking donations.
The Search Dog Foundation recruits dogs rescued from abuse or abandonment, gives them professional training,
and partners them with firefighters to find people buried alive in the wreckage of natural disasters or terrorist
attacks.
The Search Dog Foundation ensures lifetime care for each dog: once rescued, these dogs will never need to be
rescued again.
Since 1995, the group has placed 63 dogs with handlers; 13 of its dogs worked at the World Trade Center site
after the 2001 terrorist attack.
It costs $10,000 to sponsor a dog and firefighter team.
Soldiers shipping out for duty often have little notice. They are reduced to giving
their pets to shelters, to abandoning them or even having them put to sleep.
A couple of organizations are offering more comforting options:
Operation Noble Foster — matches called-up
cat owners with families willing to take in their pets.
Military Pets FOSTER Project
— offers the same service for cats, dogs, birds, fish and even horses.
If you'd like to help out, visit their websites for details, to fill out forms and provide references.
"42% of adults admit to taking their dog out for the sole purpose of meeting someone of the opposite sex;
15% say they found a spouse that way." Pedigree
Sometimes there are surprising "human benefits" for some of the growing numbers of high-tech
products designed for pet owners. Here's a great one:
One enterprising female takes along the "Talk to Me Treatball" (available at most pet stores) on outings
with her four-legged companion.
When she spies a attractive man, she tosses the toy in his direction and notes his reaction when the bright
red ball comments, "Hello. My owner thinks you're cute."

Just how safe is shipping pets via the cargo hold of airplanes? Answers will be on the
way in response to a new federal rule that requires airlines to report incidents of animal loss, injury or death.
As of June 15, 2005, airlines must report such incidents to the U.S. Department of Transportation, which will
post the information on its monthly Air Travel Consumer report at: airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports

National Public Radio's "Fresh Air" on May 24, 2005?
Host Terry Gross interviewed Pet Detective Kathy Albrecht. Albrecht is a former police officer who used to work
with search and rescue dogs. She now searches for lost pets using her specially trained bloodhounds, and a Weimaraner.
Lostapet.org, Albrecht's website, offers tips based on knowledge of lost pet behavior.
Pet Detective Kathy Albrecht is the author of "THE LOST PET CHRONICLES: Adventures of a K-9 Cop Turned
Pet Detective." This fascinating book about Kat's unusual journey from police detective to pet detective.
SoloTravelPortal.com comment: If the book is as fascinating as the NPR interview, it's a great read!
